Description
Being alone together as a family, living in quarantine, in lockdown, social distancing, being furloughed. Just some new terms we learned in recent months. When I started working on this painting mid-February, the Coronavirus Covid-19 was still quite far from our own homes. At least, it felt that way. We had heard about it, but were not too bothered about it.
I started painting the first dots and felt inspired by a work I made earlier. I wanted to recreate the effect of beads by using different colours of dots in a circle line.
In the weeks that followed, I kept adding dots and the serious consequences of Covid-19 in Europe became increasingly visible. People were obliged to stay at home. Businesses had to close, public life came to a halt. And social life as we knew changed rigorously and working from home became the new norm.
This gave me more time to paint and the abstract patterns in my painting grew. But as my painting progressed, the dots reminded me less of beads and more and more of an enlarged version of the Covid-19 virus.
Instinctively the circle has always appealed to me, with the dot as the ultimate circle. The idea of infinity, no beginning and no end, appeals to me. For me, the circles and the spaces around the circles symbolise the people in my life, and the connections between people that persist even though they cannot meet in person.
I painted silver flowers in the background of this painting. Depending on the light, these may or may not be visible. Similar to how sometimes it can be a choice to see something positive in a difficult situation.
Keep safe everyone.
